NOLS Marketing Re-structuring; New Positions Available
A lot has changed in the world of NOLS marketing—the NOLS Bus; television opportunities; media coverage; corporate partnerships; the addition of WMI and NOLS Professional Training—as a result the structure of our department needs to change as well. Over the next month or so we will be hiring for two new positions—a NOLS Pro/WMI marketing coordinator and a Word of Mouth marketing coordinator. Jeanne O’Brien will be moving into another newly created position in the marketing department—public relations and partnerships manager. As a result we will be hiring a marketing manager to assume the supervision and some of the project responsibility that Jeanne has managed.
Additionally, we are in the process of hiring a bus events coordinator to replace Doug Skiba, who moved to Colorado recently. Much of the re-structure will be accomplished by moving individuals into new roles , but we will also be doing some hiring from outside the department and possibly the school. We are going to hire these positions in a “jump ball” fashion allowing people to apply for any or all of the positions. The application deadline is August 19, 2005. Once we have all of the applications we will then sort things out and try to match people’s strengths to appropriate positions. Position descriptions will be posted soon on the jobs section of the NOLS website. Gotta love a free for all!

NOLS Grads Blast Off After Delays
After their flight was delayed last week, NOLS Professional Training graduates Wendy Lawrence, Charlie Camarda, and Jim Kelly left the earth's atmosphere this morning at 10:39 a.m. as part of a crew of seven on the space shuttle Discovery. Camarda and Kelly both took courses in Utah's canyonland, while Lawrence took a kayaking course in the Pacific Northwest.
Around 70% of NASA's current astronauts have first tested their interpersonal, risk management and leadership skills on the ground with a NOLS course before they leave on their missions.
The mission, originally scheduled for July 13th, was delayed due to damage to the shuttle's hydrogen-fuel gauges. The astronauts will be resupplying and continuing construction on the International Space Station.
To read more about the NOLS-NASA relationship, read this recent article from the Casper Star-Tribune.

It Was "Awesome"
Clay and his course mates on his Wind River Wilderness course, WRW 6/20-2, made it back to town yesterday. Last evening Peg and I had the group over to our home for dessert. Everyone was looking tan, fit and happy. What a great group of kids. Enthusiastic, polite and super nice. And boy, could they down cake and ice cream.
They regaled our family with some of the stories of their adventure. Sounds like they had a blast. Clay, ever the the man of few words told us that the course was "awesome". Hopefully we will be able to pry a bit more information out of him tonight over dinner.

NOLS in Yesterday's NY Times
Yesterday NOLS was in the New York Times in the Physical Culture column of the Thursday Styles section. NOLS instructor Dave Anderson tested some ultra-light backpacking gear. The article is short and then you need to view the slide show to see the gear and Dave's review.

'74 NOLS Grad 4th of July Memory
From the July 4, 2005 Baltimore Sun article on favorite 4th of July memories:
1974. I was part of a National Outdoor Leadership School program in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. Our group finished our big hike and got to our campsite on a small lake on July 3, such a beautiful day! Most of the 25 did a quick swim in the lake -- quite refreshing with some snow around. Then, we camped around the lake and woke up in the middle of the cold night to snow!!! And naturally, during the Fourth everyone was amused and we kept singing "God Bless America," "The Star-Spangled Banner" and were loving the beauty of the world.-- Susan Meeker Naeny, Timonium
