Southwest Outdoor Educator Course, round 2

Danika and Lauren This Monday, Shay, our trusty transpo manager, picked up the Southwest Outdoor Educator Course from the KOFA Wildlife Refuge.  They arrived at the branch that morning for an in town transition to climb camp at Cochise Stronghold.  Spirits were high as the team transitioned and they were ready to hit the rocks when they left for round two, Tuesday morning!  Photos courtesy of Martha Flower, student SOE 1/11/07

Our first course this season was the Southwest Outdoor Educator Course.  They went out fully loaded with 16 students and 3 instructors on Friday, January 10th.   Their first stop, the KOFA Wildlife Refuge…hope they are staying warm.

SNOW DAY in the DESERT

snow at NOLS Southwest

Last Sunday, the 21st, snow fell and accumulated in the Sonoran Desert for the first time in years.  Members of the branch are headed to Mount Lemmon this Friday for an authentic Southern Arizona powder day.

Branch Beautification 2

The spring season here at NOLS Southwest has been quiet when it comes to students being around, but there is never a dull moment here in Tucson.  The branch team has been working hard to get the grounds ready for this season.  We have a fabulous newly refurbished quonset, thanks to last semester’s beta level ops assistant Mark Atkinson.

Also this past Wednesday, 7 of the 10 in town team members busted out a 4-hour session of gravel moving.  The rugged, muscle-popping team moved 33 tons of gravel around the branch.

In addition to branch beautification, we have been working on our compost pile, which was ravaged by a local family of Javelinas over the holidays.  James and Dave are working diligently to get it up and running again.

NOLS/Orvis Course Featured

BigcutPage 20 of the January/February 2007 edition of the Orvis Fishing News circular features our unique NOLS/Orvis partnership that creates "the world's most comprehensive fly-fishing program for young adults."

This new, 30-day NOLS course in Wyoming combines traditional wilderness backpacking curriculum with instruction by certified Orvis guides, including six days of drift boat instruction, practice and angling. See the Orvis Fishing News or click here for more information on this exciting new course.

Isn't it time you learned to get your fly to "like a cobweb alight"?

The latest distraction

The interns are gone, but definitely not forgotten.  They left a legacy at the RM and we miss them something fierce.  To help us cope with the loss is the new RM addition.

Bootstrap, aka "Boots", the new NOLS Rocky Mountain distraction

Boots, the latest addition

Our beloved Tipper, will accept belly rubs 24 hours a day

Tipper, the great!

Winter has finally settled into the Winds, and our little part of Wyoming.  Folks are slip sliding around town, shoveling sidewalks, and for the most part everyone is glad to finally see a substantial amount of the fluffy white stuff.  It finally feels like winter.  The Rocky Mountain office welcomed our newest member in the New Year, Bootstrap, affectionately known as "Boots".  She is a beautiful and precocious bundle of fur and teeth hailing from Big Sur, California.  She relocated to Lander via Brendan & Lindsey Madden.  "Tipper", whom we all know and love, is doing her best to teach "Boots" the ropes, and still manages to grab a treat from Glenda, afterwards ambling back to Brendan's couch where she waits for someone to scratch her belly.  At 11 weeks old, this 3/4 lab-retriever with a snow-boarders attitude, has won all of our hearts!

'Til next time,

Dane
