NOLS in Scandinavia
Sara, Chris and the rest of the Rocky Mountain send their very own Lara McCluskey into the wilderness of Scandinavia to instruct on a NOLS first experience. Scandinavia exhibits unparalleled opportunities for wilderness exploration that NOLS is excited to explore. The sea kayaking section has already begun along the coast of the Norwegian Sea. Lara will join the students this week and they will soon begin backpacking in the tundra of Norway and move into Sweden as the course progresses.

Leaving the River and Heading to the Rock
The Rock and River course just pulled into the Rocky Mountain this afternoon from their section of rafting and kayaking on the Green River in Utah. The water was super high along with their spirits. They had an encounter with a black bear so they had the opportunity to practice their bomber bear camping skills. They leave today to go to Sinks Canyon just outside of Lander to begin the rock climbing section of their course.

Behind the Scenes
These are the four smiling faces of our Issue Room staff, Summer, Clark, Beth and Zach. The RM could not function were it not for these guys and gals. Beth is our Outfitting Coordinator. She and the crew are busy getting students and instructors ready for their courses by doing anything from sewing tents to prepping climbing gear. They are the RM's full time gear gurus and we appreciate all the super duper work they do. Thanks guys!

NOLS is a member of Sportsmen for the Wyoming Range, and supports the Wyoming Range Legacy Act. If passed, this act would help protect the mountain range from future oil and gas development. NOLS considers this terrain to be a vital component of the outdoor classroom.

Drum Circle on NOLS RM's Front Lawn
Students from the Fort Washakie Charter High School, a unique school blending traditional and modern teaching techniques for Native Americans, departed Wednesday on a weeklong course in the Wind River Range. This is a special course for these students because it gives many of them the opportunity to explore the land that their ancestors came from. The students and staff all gathered on the front lawn for a ceremonial drum circle and a blessing led by the elders of the tribe.

NOLS NYC Book Club Discusses "A Bend in the River"
NOLS- NYC Book Club - Meeting July 16,2008
Join us for a discussion of A Bend in the River by Nobel Prize winner V. S. Naipaul. Here's a snippet of what Amazon.com says about Naipaul's acclaimed book:
"This is one of those novels that can haunt the imagination for the rest of the reader's life. It is a true masterpiece of exploratory fiction, from the opening paragraph, "The world is what it is," to the closing images of moths "white in white light." Its world is brutal and alien, yet brings out the humanity, vanities, and hopes that all of us share. As a window into the mind of underdeveloped countries, it is unsurpassed."
WHEN: July 16, 2008
WHERE: The Half King, 505 W 23RD ST, New York, NY 10011
TIME: 7 p.m. to whenever...
