Earthquake
Santiago, in the central region of Chile, suffered an earthquake in the early hours today. The damage done to the city there is substantial, and Chilean authorities are of course still sorting through the damage and trying to help those affected.
NOLS courses in the field right now are all in the region of Aysen in southern Chile. Students are well away from the area physically shaken by the Santiago quakes. There has been some concern about aftershocks and tsunamis affecting coastal areas in the south of Chile. The Chilean navy has assured us that tsunamis are not a concern for this coastline from this quake, although there may be some tidal anomalies.
Field courses are being told of the earthquake as they call in to the base for their scheduled communications. We do not expect these events to impact the safety of the students in the field.
