NOLS in Washington Post's On Leadership
The Washington Post recently added Rick Rochelle, NOLS Professional Training's director to its distinguished panel "On Leadership."
As stated in The Washington Post: "On Leadership will serve as an open and lively forum for an discussion of what makes for great leadership... The world is full of successful leaders who have developed their own sense of what works and what doesn't. Our aim is to tap into that knowledge, understanding and experience and apply it, in real time, to an online conversation about real world developments.
Each week, we pose a question about some recent development that has attracted attention and ask a distinguished panel of nearly 100 leaders and leadership experts to offer their answers and comments. It's an impressive and articulate group, drawn from diverse fields, with very different notions of what leadership is about."
In his first post, Rick Rochelle shares his insight on situational leadership as employed by Sarah Palin during her 2008 Vice Presidential bid.

A New Perspective in 88 Days
" It is the most life-affirming and confidence-building thing I have ever done."
John Balke of Libertyville, Illinois completed a Spring Semester in the Southwest and gained not only technical and leadership skills, but a whole new perspective. "I loved it," he recently told his local paper. "Besides the actual activities and things we did, NOLS gave me a different perspective on my life."
While backpacking, rock climbing, caving, and canoeing through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, John became a firm believer in the benefits of NOLS, telling people he knows to "do it" because of the payoffs he experienced. Excited by his experiences and the support his coursemates provided for him, John is now striving to become a NOLS instructor and plans to take a NOLS Alumni trip.

Praises for NOLS!
“Well, sir, it was when I was dangling 15 feet inside a bottomless crevasse, supported only by a harness attached to a thin nylon rope, held by a group of fellow students that I thought, yes, this is the true meaning of teamwork.”
A NOLS Teton Valley Backcountry Ski alum, has been singing our praises on his Blog. In the post he comments on all the benefits of a NOLS education experience and the things we do here to help our alumni. We think he gives a great overview of what NOLS is all about, what is happenning here, and how to get involved. Check it out at Find The Pulse .

NOLS Grad's TV Show Airs Next Week
On Tuesday, May 13, check out NOLS grad David Breashears’ new film, “Storm Over Everest” on PBS’ Frontline. Breashears came to NOLS at the age of 15 to do a Rocky Mountain adventure course and has since summited Everest five times. He has spent his life climbing mountains and credits NOLS with getting him started.
“Storm Over Everest” tells the story of climbers trapped on Everest by an intense storm in May 1996. Breashears was filming the first-ever IMAX movie on Everest at the time and aided in the rescue of climbers stranded by the storm. Hear survivors discuss the remarkable stories of those that made it down and the unfortunate loss of those that didn’t. We’ll be watching here in Lander, and we hope you will, too.
To find out what time it’s on near you, check out your local listings.

Grad finds a new career with NOLS
Elyse Guarino wasn't necessarily looking for NOLS when she found the school. "I was in transition in my life and was looking for a direction," she said. "I overheard a conversation that helped me decide what to do."
As it turns out, that conversation was pretty influential. A little more than a year after taking a course at NOLS Southwest, Elyse finds herself employed there full-time. It began with a three-month internship after completing her course. This fall, she'll return to the Southwest as Outfitting Manager.
